Peppermill Dam Circular Walk (Concise)

5 May 2009

See also the full version of this walk, complete with more photos.

This walk starts and ends from a track off the A977 just north of Kincardine.

It is easy and largely circular, with long stretches close to the peaceful Peppermill Dam and a variety of cover. It also takes in a crumbling mausoleum.

It also makes for a great family bike ride.

Navigation

Navigating the route is straightforward. Away from it it is easy to get lost amongst the trees and similar paths.

Getting There

From the A977, 1.2 miles south of the roundabout intersection with the A907, turn east (left) onto a hedged track through a golf course. Follow the track for 700m to the small parking area at the start of the walk.

Travelling north along the A977 the track is on the right, under half a mile beyond the entrances to the Tulliallan Police Training College and Tulliallan Golf Course, also on the right.

The Walk

The walk starts at 2 on the map.

Follow the track with an open field on the left and woodland on the right.

At the end of the field the path continues through a strip of woodland.

The remains of a disused track forks to the left, across an arched bridge with trees now growing on top.

To your left at 3 is a derelict mausoleum within a disused graveyard. To view it (recommended) ascend by the foot worn path. The large iron gate is unlocked. Return to the main path the same way.

Bear right at 4, crossing a small lade (water channel) via the bridge onto a narrower foot worn path, keeping the field to your right.

Continue between the field and dam at 5.

The small island at 6 will give you an indication of how far you are along the route.

Turn left where you meet an intersection of tracks at 7.

At 8 the path crosses the channel that would have made a tighter route around the dam impracticable.

In April 2009 the level of the dam was exceptionally high and the normal path flooded at 9 requiring an alternative route to be found through a narrow but dense band of young firs(?).

The rest of the walk remains straightforward. Follow the obvious route until you complete the circle at 4. Then retrace your steps to the starting point.
